Jeez.

Where does the time go? Only a few weeks until Thanksgiving, then *GASP*, Christmas. I don't know if I'm really ready for the onslaught that is the holiday season.

I also realized that I haven't posted any recipes in ages. That makes me sad. I got the most recent King Arthur baking catalog yesterday, and it just makes me want to bake, bake, BAKE. I will be doing some baking for the holidays. I think I'll give homemade granola this year for gifts. I made a few batches awhile back and it turned out great. I always do some cookies and quick breads too.

Just thinking about the holidays wears me out. I think it's time for bed...maybe I can just sleep straight through to January? Pretty please?

It's been a zoo of a summer around here

Holy crap, I've been busy.

First of all, and certainly the most exciting, is the opening of The Hero House, my BF's new comic book store. He's dreamed of opening another one (he owned one when he lived in Ohio several years ago), and he and his partner found the right location at the right time and went for it. They've worked super hard getting everything ready, and the store looks fabulous. It's going to be a huge amount of work for him, because he's keeping his full-time job as well as working several days a week at Hero House. I don't see him as often, but I know it's for a good cause. The eventual goal is that the store is successful enough to support us full time. Cross your fingers for us, and if you're ever in Indianapolis, visit the store!

Things got pretty busy for me at work too. My boss had her baby at the end of May, and he's a giant butterball of a cutie-pie. We are all adjusting to the extra person and the extra workload. My 45-year-old back needs a little strengthening; toting around a 19 lb. baby all the time isn't as easy as it used to be. The big brother, after some initial reservations, has embraced his role as protector of his little brother. My boss returns to work soon, so we'll be switching to bottle feeding soon. I'm sure he'll love that.

I also enjoyed a short trip to Savannah last week. It was a fun break in a beautiful city. I could never live there, though, because my hair would look like a Brillo pad all the time. The heat and humidity were OPPRESSIVE. I had dinner at Paula Deen's restaurant The Lady and Sons, and it was just okay. Waiting in line for 3 hours to eat is not the best way to spend an afternoon, that's for sure. Some of the locals said that Paul and her sons don't spend much time at the restaurant any more.I can certainly see evidence of that. The gooey butter cake, however, was excellent! I also took a fun riverboat ride which gave us a welcome break from the heat. The scenery was gorgeous and the breezes off the water were heavenly.

My sister and family came from Ohio for our annual Indiana State Fair visit, where the boys try their darndest to eat everything that's available on a stick. This year's most raved-about food was chocolate-covered bacon. I passed, because it JUST LOOKED NASTY. I'll stick with roasted sweet corn, thank you very much. We're all hittin' the Dairy Barn in this pic--with ice cream and grilled cheese for a dollar, it's the best bargain on the midway!

I'm ready for fall, and for things to cool off and slow down a bit. The cool part, I'm pretty sure I'll get. As for slower...probably not anytime soon.

Wow.

Say what you will about his freakish tendencies, but Michael Jackson was a musical genius. I could watch him dance forever. I remember asking my mom how he danced like that and she jokingly told me that "he had wheels on his feet." I believed it.

This makes me incredibly sad.

Club kid

I just love this picture. I can't believe I took it with my cell phone!

All he needs is a glow stick and a bottle of water.

Sans talent

Yeah, that would be me.

I'm still struggling with trying to update my blog header. It would help if I had more than 5 minutes to devote to wading through lines and lines of html code, but I don't. So I just get really confused and frustrated really quickly.

Then the lovely Miss Alex enlisted the help of the uber-knowledgeable Scottsman Sans Pantaloons. He very thoughtfully spent time deciphering Blogger's stupid coding and translating it into something I can kinda sorta maybe understand if I have 2-3 hours to devote to the project. I plan on trying to do just that this weekend.

Thanks again, Andy pants. You rock.

Oh, and go over and show Miss Alex some love. She's had a very shitty week.

Why is it all so confusing?

Frustrated.

It's how I feel about trying to figure out my Zune. I've had it for awhile. Wayne got it for me for Christmas last year. I chose it over an iPod because it also functions as a regular radio. Sometimes I want to listen to NPR when I take a walk, you know?

Anyhoo, my Zune started acting all weird the last few times I've used it. It will only play about 30 seconds of each song I have loaded in. Prior to this, it's worked perfectly fine. I've been scouring so-called "help sites" trying to figure out what could be wrong, but so far, the only suggestions have been to wipe everything out and start over. I've rebooted a million times, but that hasn't fixed the issue either.

So last night, I bit the bullet and wiped everything out. I have been gettting emails from Zune about their Marketplace--you pay $14.99 a month for unlimited songs. I figured I'd just join for a few months, build up my library of tunes, and be done with it. Before I took the plunge, I did a little research and found out a few things.

1. You are "renting" the songs. Your membership lapses, and you lose your content.

2. DRM is apparently my enemy.

3. I am WAY more confused now that I've tried to educate myself. I am beyond exasperated.

All I want is to put songs in my player and have them stay there FOREVER. Isn't that the point? It seems that if you pay to download a song, it should be yours. I don't get it.

I know I can rip songs from CDs I already own. That part I can handle. What I don't understand is where I can download songs that I can keep, not rent. I feel like my head is going to explode trying to decipher all this CRAP.

I just want my music.
